I'm Kate Wand (formerly known as Kate Sharp). I'm an illustrator and designer from the midlands, UK.
I make work based on the world around me and my love for my hometown Nottingham. I incorporate found and handmade textures frequently into my work.
Illustration wasn't always a clear career path for me. Up until the age of 16/17 I wanted to study science and become maybe a vet or a biologist. However I realised that nothing makes me happy like making art does. So here we are, I have a first class degree in Graphic Design and I'm making my way in the world as a freelance Illustrator.
At university I discovered my love of book making and story telling. Zine making is a really accessible way for people to get their stories and ideas our into the world.
One of my career goals is to illustrate a traditionally published children's book.
In 2020, my book 'Lions Hate Pigeons' won the Graphic Design award in the Young Creatives Awards. I wrote and illustrated a children's book based on the stone statue lions who live in Nottingham's market square. The lions come alive at night and get their own back on the pesky pigeons.
Since winning the award, I have joined the charity as a trustee and help to continue the wonderful work of showcasing Nottingham's young creative talent.
I am interested in doing more editorial and mural work to diversify my portfolio. If you have a project in mind, please contact me.
